How to use the qr code generator

  1. 1Choose what the code should contain: a link or text, Wi-Fi details, or an email.
  2. 2Fill in the fields. The QR code updates as you type.
  3. 3Optionally change the colors, size and error correction level.
  4. 4Scan the preview with your phone camera to test it.
  5. 5Download it as PNG for documents or SVG for print and design work.

Static QR codes that never expire

This tool makes static QR codes: the link or text is stored directly in the pattern. There is no redirect service in between, so the code keeps working for as long as the destination exists, and nobody can track scans or switch it off.

The trade-off is that a static code cannot be edited after it is printed. If you might need to change the destination later, point the code at a page you control.

Error correction levels

QR codes contain extra data so they still scan when part of the code is dirty or covered:

  • L recovers about 7% damage and gives the simplest pattern
  • M recovers about 15% and is a good default
  • Q recovers about 25%
  • H recovers about 30%, which helps if a logo will be placed over the center

Higher levels make the pattern denser, so keep the printed size larger when using them.

Printing tips

  • Keep strong contrast. Dark codes on a light background scan most reliably.
  • Leave a clear margin (the "quiet zone") around the code.
  • As a rule of thumb, make the printed code at least 2 cm (about 0.8 in) wide, and larger if it will be scanned from a distance.
  • Always test a printed proof with more than one phone.

Privacy

QR codes are generated in your browser. Your links, Wi-Fi passwords and text are not uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Do these QR codes expire?

No. They are static codes with the content stored in the pattern itself, so they work for as long as the link or information inside them is valid.

Can I use the QR codes commercially?

Yes. Codes you create are yours to use on products, packaging, flyers and business cards with no attribution required.

Should I download PNG or SVG?

PNG works everywhere, including documents and slides. SVG is a vector format that stays sharp at any size, which is best for print and design software.

How does the Wi-Fi QR code work?

It stores the network name, password and security type in a standard format. Most modern phone cameras offer to join the network when they scan it.

Why won't my QR code scan?

Check that there is enough contrast and a clear margin, that the code is not too small, and that light colors have not been used for the dark squares.
