How to use the white screen light
- 1Choose a color. Pure white is brightest; warm white is softer on skin tones.
- 2Pick a layout: full screen, one half of the screen, or a ring light frame.
- 3Set the brightness, then press Turn on full screen.
- 4Place the screen in front of you, slightly above eye level, and turn your monitor brightness up.
- 5Press Esc or tap the screen when you are done.
Using a screen as a video call light
A bright screen in front of you works like a soft-box light. It fills in shadows and makes your face clearer on camera, which is especially helpful in a dim room or with a window behind you.
For the best result:
- Use a second monitor, tablet or laptop placed just behind or beside your webcam.
- Turn the device's own brightness to maximum, then fine-tune with the slider here.
- Try warm white if pure white makes your skin look blue or washed out.
- Use half screen if you only have one display: keep your call on one side and the light on the other, or light yourself from one side.
- The ring light layout leaves the center dark, which reduces glare in glasses.
Screen tests
Solid black, red, green and blue screens help you spot dead or stuck pixels and check for backlight bleed. Clean the screen first, then look closely across each color in full screen.
Keeping the screen awake
While the light is on, the page asks the browser to keep the display awake, where supported, so it does not dim in the middle of a call. Some phones do not allow this, and iPhone Safari does not support full screen for web pages, so the light fills the browser window instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will a white screen really improve my video?
Yes, a bright screen facing you adds soft light to your face, much like a small studio light. It works best in a dim room with the screen close to you.
How do I make it brighter?
Set the slider to 100% and turn up your device's display brightness. The slider can only dim the light, not exceed your screen's maximum.
Why won't it go full screen on my iPhone?
iPhone Safari does not allow web pages to enter full screen. The light still fills the browser window, and you can hide the toolbars by scrolling or rotating the phone.
Can I use it to test for dead pixels?
Yes. Choose black, white, red, green or blue and look closely for dots that stay a different color.
